Introducing the ‘Collaborate with Us’ Tool: Connecting Experts in Engineering Education

At the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) in the Faculty of Engineering, we’re all about supporting teaching staff and Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to deliver exceptional teaching and create a fantastic student experience. Our goal? To make Sheffield an acknowledged leader in engineering education.

We’re thrilled to introduce a new initiative: the ‘Collaborate with Us’ tool. This resource connects engineering professionals at the University of Sheffield with external organisations seeking experts. Whether you need a keynote speaker, an examiner or accreditor, a project consultant, or specialist advice, we’re here to help you find the right people. Visit our webpage for details on how to connect with us, explore our mission, and learn what we aim to achieve.

Why is this a big deal?

This initiative brings together a brilliant mix of expertise from academic, technical, and professional staff across the Faculty of Engineering. It’s an opportunity for our community of educators to share their knowledge and experience, making an impact both within Sheffield and beyond. Plus, it’s a fantastic way for our staff to showcase and grow their reputation for teaching excellence, a cornerstone of the Centre’s mission.

The importance of collaboration in a rapidly evolving field cannot be overstated. Engineering education is increasingly emphasising industry-academic partnerships, hands-on learning, and the cultivation of teaching excellence to prepare students for real-world challenges. By connecting experts with external stakeholders, this initiative positions Sheffield as a hub for innovation and leadership in these critical areas.

What can you expect when you reach out to us?

When you contact CEE, you’ll be connected with some of the best in the field—think Principal Fellows of the Higher Education Academy, National Teaching Fellows, and award-winning educators. Whether your project requires guidance, leadership, or practical advice, our experts are ready to help you succeed.

A Collaborative Mission

Collaboration lies at the heart of CEE’s work. Our mission is to ensure that colleagues with diverse skills work together to deliver sector-leading engineering education. This initiative is about more than individual expertise—it’s about fostering connections that inspire innovation, spark creativity, and make a tangible difference in engineering education. Together, we can share knowledge, develop exciting activities, and contribute meaningfully to the broader engineering community.

Hosting Our Way to Excellence

The Centre for Engineering Education has been thriving in its mission to share the wealth of knowledge held by our staff. Recently, we’ve hosted several impactful conferences that brought together diverse communities in engineering education. Our strong partnerships link with the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) and the hosting of their annual European Conventions for Engineering Deans (ECED) gave us the chance to bring together Deans, Heads of Department and Directors of Education from all over Europe to meet and to discuss, in-depth, common issues in higher engineering education

We are home to the UniMaker event, which is held in The Diamond—our hub for practical engineering. This conference celebrated creativity and invention, drawing participants from across Higher Education who are passionate about making, designing, and building with diverse tools and materials. Next, the Practical Engineering Education (PEE) conference was a real highlight, uniting educators eager to exchange ideas on innovative teaching practices with academic leaders exploring ways to reinvigorate practical learning in their curricula. Lastly, we proudly supported and hosted the prestigious International Symposium on Academic Makerspaces (ISAM). This event serves as a global platform for the academic makerspace community to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and promote best practices in makerspace education.

Driving Change Across the Sector

These conferences provide invaluable opportunities to highlight the power of collaborative, hands-on learning environments. By fostering creativity, innovation, and practical skill development, we are not only transforming engineering education at Sheffield but also shaping the wider Higher Education landscape.

Our staff are committed to engaging with external stakeholders and sharing their expertise to address the growing demand for industry-academic collaboration and promote teaching excellence. These trends are shaping the future of engineering education, ensuring students are prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Through initiatives like the ‘Collaborate with Us’ tool and our events, we’re proud to be driving meaningful change in how engineering is taught and practised in a student-centred way.

We hope that professionals reach out to us, for support or assistance or to open up a dialogue with the range of staff that are working in engineering education. If you have any questions at all please email us at cee@sheffield.ac.uk.
