Do we actually teach practical skills?

I think there may be a common problem in Engineering Education. This is just a suspicion borne out from things I’ve seen over the years and I don’t claim to be an authority on the subject. I’d be interested to know if anyone else feels likewise. Sometimes there is a tendency to conflate students participating in applying a skill with teaching how to apply that skill. Take for example, time management. Learning this skill is, as we have all discovered recently, critically important for students to learn for their future career. But do we actually teach students to manage their time? I don’t think I was ever formally taught time management during my masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, but that feels a significantly long time ago now so maybe things have changed. The problem with big conferences is often that it impossible to go to all the sessions you want to, and it can be hard not to feel like you are missing important sessions with big implications for engineering education. No fear, to save us from this problem here, Harry Day, the Director of Education for MEE , shares some his highlights from the European Society for Engineering Education annual conference, SEFI24. I was asked to pick my favourite session from the SEFI2024 conference to write about, but instead of focusing on just one I’d like to consider several sessions together into a bit of a story - and overview of my experience at the conference. One of the reasons that the teaching in Engineering at Sheffield is effective and high quality is that it is a team effort, delivered by experts and supported by many. Jon Fullwood is a Technical Team leader in Computing, Control and Electrical Engineering in Diamond Engineering and presented his work, A co-curricular approach to addressing the variation of practical skills in students from diverse backgrounds , at the recent European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI24) conference.
